Expected instructions can still be fraudulent
Falls Church, Virginia — October 26, 2026. Aktoh Cyber highlights the need for independent verification when a closing transaction receives changed wiring instructions. A request inside a familiar email thread may still come from a compromised account. Neither the thread nor the transaction deadline authenticates a new beneficiary.
Before a closing wire
Confirm initial and changed instructions using a telephone number established separately from the request. Require two authorized reviewers for a beneficiary change, record how it was checked and tell clients how to report suspicious communications. Do not rely on a small test transfer alone; it can reach a criminal's account too.
If funds have moved to a suspected fraudulent destination, contact the sending bank immediately and report to IC3. A recall request is time-sensitive and recovery is not assured.
Aktoh scope and next steps
Aktoh describes specialist roles for investigation and coordination, with consequential actions requiring human approval by default. Confirm supported connections, permissions, retention and escalation before relying on an automated workflow. This is not a promise to inspect every payment, prevent every loss or satisfy a regulatory obligation.
Takeaway. Assign an accountable reviewer, verify through trusted channels and test the controls before relying on them.
